Touching People’s Lives: Steigenberger Business Bay

The Leading Emirates Trade Magazine · 2017

In short

This 2017 trade profile is the only document in the archive that describes the Steigenberger Hotel Business Bay in any detail, and the detail is material-by-material: ostrich leather wall panels, illuminated onyx, rose gold metals, stone flooring and carpet mixing over-scaled geometric patterns with Far Eastern florals, and a 20-metre undulating crystal chandelier in the ballroom. It also carries a snapshot of the practice as it was in 2017 — over 60 hotels and 200 restaurants and bars — which is worth reading against the numbers LW publishes now.

The work in the piece

Steigenberger Business Bay Hotel · Media One Hotel

What does the Steigenberger interior consist of?

High ceilings and vast glazing at the front and rear flood the building with light; against that, refined detail and a palette of rich materials produce what the piece calls a modern elegant design infused with an ancient feel. Ostrich leather wall panels, illuminated onyx, rose gold metals and plush fabrics do the luxury; the flooring and carpet mix over-scaled geometric patterns with Far Eastern-inspired florals; custom specialist lighting runs through, and the ballroom carries a 20-metre undulating crystal chandelier.

What does it say about Media One?

That the concept was aiming to be a benchmark in downtown living: an “edgy yet stylish urban loft” feel turning the address into an informal and eclectic city destination, with quirky contemporary furniture, customised industrial lights and modern street art. See the CID case study for the room-by-room account.

Why do the numbers here matter?

Because they date the document precisely. In 2017 the practice counted over 60 hotels and 200 restaurants and bars, listed Finn Theilgaard among its partners, and announced a London office opening that September. LW has no London studio today. Read this as a record of 2017, not as a description of the practice now — see About Us for the current position.
