IFDM Wonder: Nature as an Operational Imperative

IFDM Wonder · Winter 2025 · Winter 2025 · Words: Pooja Shah-Mulani

In short

IFDM invited Pooja Shah-Mulani to contribute to the Winter 2025 Wonder Book alongside NOA and Pnat, and her piece is the most precise published statement of LW’s method that exists anywhere. Her argument is that integrating nature is an operational and ethical requirement rather than a finish, and that interventions which ignore their ecological and socio-cultural surroundings inevitably feel hollow. She then names the two projects that demonstrate it: the Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara and Bab Al Shams.

The work in the piece

Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara Safari Camp · Bab Al Shams

What is the method?

An analytical reading of place, ecology and community before design begins — not as research to be referenced later, but as the basis the design is derived from. Shah-Mulani states the failure mode plainly first.

At LW Design, we maintain that architectural and interior interventions which disregard their ecological and socio-cultural surroundings inevitably produce outcomes that feel hollow, lacking in narrative, identity, and long-term relevance.

How does the Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara demonstrate it?

Through three decisions taken from the savannah rather than applied to it: spatial planning, material selection and artisanal collaboration were all informed by the ecosystem’s own logics. Shah-Mulani names the low-impact structures, the Maasai-inspired forms and the locally produced craft as what embeds the camp in the region’s environmental and cultural continuum.

And Bab Al Shams?

By going back to vernacular desert typologies. The re-envisioning uses passive environmental strategies, courtyards and tonal material palettes to strengthen the dialogue between interior space and the desert outside — which is a performance argument as much as an aesthetic one.

Through such projects, we argue that the integration of nature is an operational and ethical imperative, one that enhances environmental performance, strengthens cultural authenticity, and elevates the experiential quality.
