identity 215: A Serene Escape
In short
identity’s December 2021 “Celebrating a Year in Design” issue ran The Dubai EDITION as a serene escape in the middle of Downtown. Where Sleeper worked through the venues, identity works through the fabric: the 100-metre tower on a podium rotated 45 degrees off its axis, the Venetian-plaster spiral staircase, the lighting designed with London’s Isometrix, and the projector-mapped ceiling artwork in Duomo that the magazine records as the first of its kind for the EDITION brand. All three of LW’s named leads on the project speak in it.

What was the design argument?
That restraint is harder than opulence. identity opens by noting that LW went “against the grain” to create an understated, minimalist property in a city known for the opposite, and that the simplicity is what makes the materiality, the architectural forms and the intimacy legible at all. The practice does not present this as an easy position.
It was more complicated than we thought to create something effortless while still creating something that would have the biggest impact in the market by being completely different.
Pooja Shah-Mulani, quoted in identity issue 215
The design is guided by simplicity and sophistication, free of ornament and yet luxurious.

How is the façade built?
By blending bronze screens, subtly textured grey cladding, natural stone and timber, with the podium rotated 45 degrees to open the Burj Khalifa view. Every room extends outside onto a large glazed balcony, which is what gives the tower its rhythm, and the floor-to-ceiling windows are there to light the double- and triple-height volumes inside.
What happens inside?
A journey through volumes. The triple-height lobby is grounded by a chandelier under the arched ceiling; the central spiral staircase that every EDITION has is here covered in Venetian plaster and revealed as a triple-height cascade. The lighting, designed with Isometrix, is focused at eye level and dimmed further at night with candlelight, which identity reads as deliberately cocooning. In Duomo, projectors set into the walls map Onion Lab’s digital artwork onto the domed surface — the magazine records this as a first for the brand.
The 275 rooms across six categories share one material palette of light oak and stone accents, with the veins in the natural stone and the wood matched piece by piece so the banding does not repeat. The rooms carry no artwork except a single piece by Carolle Bénitah, inspired by the Dubai Fountains.
The Dubai Edition is understated and represents exquisite luxury, attention to detail and boldness.
